New Opportunities for German Machinery Manufacturers in China: Insights from Shenzhen

Yesterday, I attended an exchange meeting between Saxon and Chinese companies in Shenzhen. Unsurprisingly, Physical AI and robotics were the clear top topics.
However, in in-depth discussions with many German machinery manufacturers, one of my core convictions grew even stronger: I remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for German machinery manufacturers in the Chinese market.
Why? Because as China transforms its industrial sector, demand for the highest precision and outstanding reliability remains strong. These are precisely the hallmarks of German industrial equipment.
However, the market is changing, and German companies need to adapt their approach in China accordingly. The days when one or two trade fair visits could immediately generate orders are over. Today, the market requires a much more targeted and differentiated approach.

I see four strategic priorities for German machinery manufacturers seeking long-term success in China.
1️⃣ Deep local market insights, not just a superficial presence German companies need to invest much more time in research before entering the market. Working with local partners, they should identify genuine market needs: Which companies are investing right now? How can decision-makers in specific industries be reached? This groundwork takes time, but it pays off.
2️⃣ Focus on industrial clusters and cooperation with local authorities Rather than casting the net too widely, companies should focus on the industrial clusters where their target customers are based. One proactive approach is to organise targeted technology seminars with local industry associations and economic development departments. This helps establish technical credibility and creates direct contact with key target customers.
3️⃣ Use new media: B2B targeting through Douyin In China, Douyin is no longer just an entertainment platform. It has become a powerful tool for reaching business audiences. Companies can use its algorithms to deliver targeted content about the advantages of German industrial equipment to specific industrial clusters and professional audiences.
4️⃣ Rethink sales: inbound marketing, from push to pull The best B2B marketing makes it possible for customers with specific needs to approach you first. Only then does the sales team visit the customer to discuss the technical details. This approach can improve conversion rates and build stronger trust.
Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Chris Pereira, Robotics Saxony and Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH for organising this excellent event. High-quality platforms like this help us identify industry trends and create new momentum for German-Chinese cooperation.
